Why You Should Be Walking!

benefitsofwalkingHave you started your daily walking routine yet? A new study reveals walking is the best form of exercise for everyone and can actually add up to 7 years to your life if you walk everyday for 20-25 minutes. Wow — that is incredible.

It’s reported that people who sit for 8 or more hours everyday have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, increased risks of heart disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. That is scary.

There are so many benefits to walking:

Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
Improve blood lipid profile
Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
Enhance mental well being
Reduce your risk of osteoporosis
Reduce your risk of breast and colon cancer
Reduce your risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes

That’s enough for me!

Walking can also be a great way to meet friends or spend time with the friends you have. What could be better than walking for exercise and walking to catch up with friends. It’s also a great thing to do with the family. Spend 30 minutes a day on the weekend walking with your kids and you will probably teach them a valuable lesson about staying active! I do that with my kids and we really enjoy it!

As with any exercise, you should start slow. Walk a few minutes a day then increase it to 20 minutes, 30 minutes or even an hour.

Now to the good news. Walking is exercise so it does burn calories. The rule of thumb is that a 180-pound person can burn 100 calories every mile walked. And 65 calories are burned for a 120-pound person. You can easily do that once a day or a couple times a week and make a huge difference in your health.

So next weekend when you are looking for something to do with the family, simply take a walk!
