The High School Sports Scene

We live in Texas… we’ve been here about four years.  And this state takes its sports seriously!  Playing sports in Texas and any state for that matter, has changed over the years. When I grew up, I was able to play any sport I chose in high school regardless if I was a stellar athlete or not.

If you are going to a large school, those days are gone. There are too many kids all vying for just a few spots in specialty sports from golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, cheerleading and dance.  If your child goes to a large school, you might want to consider focusing on one sport that he or she excels in for them to have a chance at playing in high school.

And even if they don’t make the high school team, don’t think your child isn’t good enough.  I’ve seen many select ball players never make a high school team but to go on to play in college and even get a scholarship.

In my opinion, the key to having a successful sports career for your kid is to start them early enough so they have the skills developed as they enter high school.  Some kids are just blessed to be all around natural athletes that can make any sports team. But those players are few.

Trust your gut and be honest with yourself and your child on whether he has a natural ability in the sport he chooses.  I don’t want to discourage you or your child, but I think it’s important to find something your child loves and does well.  Having at least the love and desire or the ability is a great first step toward building a successful athlete.
