rockyThe Academy Awards are upon us! And this year one of the most inspiring sports movies of all time has an opportunity to be recognized again. Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, has been nominated for Creed. This would be his first official Oscar for playing Rocky. The movie did win 3 Oscars back in 1976.

Are you inspired by “sports” themed movies? I know I am. Did you know there are actually three sports movies that won best picture. Can you name them?

These are all classic movies but the first to do it was the ultimate sports movie. It was, of course, Rocky! Here’s the list:

Rocky (1976)
Nominated 10 times and had 3 wins (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing)

Chariots of Fire (1981)
7 nominations with 4 Oscars (Best Picture, Original Score, Original Screenplay, Costume Design)

Million Dollar Baby (2004)
7 nominations and 4 wins (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor)

Wow! Three incredible movies.

But there are many more that have a number of Academy Awards nominations.

Here are just a few:

“The Champ” (1931)
It was nominated for four awards but lost best picture to “Grand Hotel”.

“The Pride of the Yankees” (1942)
Nominated for best picture and best actor (Gary Cooper). But lost to “Mrs. Miniver” and Cooper lost to James Cagney for “Yankee Doodle Dandy”.

“The Hustler” (1961)
Had nine nominations but lost best picture to “West Side Story”. Wow tough competition.

“Breaking Away” (1979)
Had five nominations and lost Best Picture honors to “Kramer vs. Kramer”. It did win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

“Raging Bull” (1980)
8 nominations but lost to “Ordinary People” for best picture. Robert De Niro did win for best actor.

“Field of Dreams” (1989)
3 nominations but sadly lost all 3. “Driving Miss Daisy” won best picture that year.

“Jerry Maguire” (1996)
5 nominations and 1 win! Cuba Gooding Jr. won best supporting actor. “The English Patient” won best picture in 1996.

“Seabiscuit” (2003)
Lost best picture to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.

As you can see sports movies are well represented at the Academy Awards. A fun walk down movie memory lane! Which movie is your favorite?
