Motivating your Kids for Spring Sports!
With all the cold and snow we have been having, it may be hard to motivate your kids for the spring sports season. The truth is you may need to motivate your kids by motivating yourself first.
1- If you are motivated, your kids will be. It may be hard to get your gears in motion, but it will be the best thing for your kids. When getting ready for your first practice, show your child the same enthusiasm as you would going to the movies or to the trampoline park. Plan the day out so this becomes the activity of the day.
2- Try not to be pushy. Parents can walk a fine line between motivation and being too pushy. We never want to take the fun out of sports for our kids by pushing too hard. I once read that one question after a game is supportive — a bunch of questions is being too pushy. So be supportive without being pushy.
3- Offer them opportunities to hone their skills outside of their scheduled practice. For example; Would you like me to practice with you? Or Would you like me to look into a traveling team? This are great questions that will again show your support and not be pushy. This is also a good time to gauge their interest in the sport.
4- Communication is the key to motivation – Every child likes to be told what a great job they are doing. But sometimes if you overdo the praise or the cheering from the stands, he may be embarrassed or annoyed and not want the attention. It works the same way with criticism. Children shouldn’t have to fear their parents screaming from the sideline or yelling at the coach. They will not motivate your child at all.
Remember just being there and present in your child’s life is all the motivation they need to succeed.
