Is My 5 Year Old Daughter Ready for Team Sports?
I was hoping my daughter would have my genuine interest in team sports by now. Afterall, I used to watch baseball with my mother at age 5 and read box scores at 10. But she just doesn’t seem to want to play any team sports. She loves her weekly swimming classes and hates to miss gymnastics. But when I ask her if she wants to play soccer, she says no because I don’t want to have to share the ball! Huh? Doesn’t sound like she is ready for team sports does it?
So what team sports are best for a 5 year old girl?
Here are some ideas and benefits for each sport:
–Soccer -Soccer develops agility, speed and stamina, and also teaches children the importance of teamwork.
–Softball/baseball – Benefits include aerobic exercise from running, strength building from batting, throwing and catching. It will also develop a kids hand-eye coordination and mental focus.
–Golf – This particular sport teaches a more than a physical activity. It teaches a level of positive development. For example, honesty, integrity, courtesy and respect for others.
–Track – Joining a track team helps build muscle and improve their fitness level through running, jumping and throwing. Being part of a team has it’s own benefits.
I love all of these ideas. All of these benefits are important for the development of any young girl or young boy.
I think we’ll start with Spring soccer!
