As a kid I can still remember the countless hours I spent with my dad shooting hoops
in the driveway, or heading to tournaments and games on the weekends. Sports
are not only a great way to keep the family together but also a great way to keep
children healthy and fit. Although sports provide many great things for participants
they do create a high risk for injury. As a parent I want to make sure my children
along with others are fully protected and safe at all times while participating. With
that in mind, NFL has made some new strides to increase player safety awareness.
With all the injuries that can occur from playing sports, a change needs to start
somewhere. Recently through out the last few years the NFL has stepped to the
forefront as the leader in trying to make sports safer. While implementing many
different rule changes that further protect athletes playing football the NFL has also
launched a new campaign called NFL Evolution. The purpose of this campaign is
to not only make people aware of the dangers that can occur from playing sports
but also to educate parents and young athletes on how to prevent these types of
There are some common injuries in contact sports, such as concussions, torn
ligaments, heat stroke and dehydration. Here is some information surrounding these
injuries and ways in which we can as parents strive to protect our children.
Concussions are minor brain trauma and can have some serious side effects such
as confusion, dizziness, headaches and nausea. In more extreme cases, it causes
memory loss and hearing loss. The NFL recently partnered has parent with EarQ, a
hearing aids supplier, to bring awareness to hearing loss among former NFL players.
Along with helping former NFL players, this partnership has been trying to inform
and educate parents and athletes on the dangers of head injuries and their direct
relation to hearing loss. Here are some ways to protect against concussions:
– Wear your helmet! Headgear should always be fitted and sized properly so that it
doesn’t slip off during play.
– Learn the right techniques for tackling and big hits. You shouldn’t be leading with
your head first.
– Always talk to a physician if you suspect any trouble or take an injury to the head
during training or practice.
– Never go back onto the field until you’re a 100 percent ready to do so.
Other common sports injuries are ligament tears. Many of these injuries occur
in the knee and affect the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. This is the ligament
responsible for holding a knee in place and allowing you to rotate. If something
happens to this ligament, it makes playing sports very difficult. There are a bunch of
things that players can do to prevent knee injuries from getting worse.
– Strengthen the muscles around your legs and knee for better power, agility and
balance. These are important in moving quickly and lessening the chance of hurting
– Talk to a doctor if you feel any odd pain or pops in your knee. It’s better to get
started on treatment right away rather than leave a knee injury untreated.
– Take the time to stretch before and after the game. You want your muscles to be
loose and not tight.
It can be difficult for some players to go to training camps in the summer. That’s
because it often has players working and running in 100 degree weather. Coaches
often have to realize that it’s too much to ask for players to be out in the sun at the
hottest times of day, particularly if you live in a more humid environment. Heat stroke
is a real threat to players who spend too much time in the sun.
In addition, dehydration is another serious injury that can happen if you’re not
drinking water before, during and after serious training or gameplay. Parents can
help by always making sure there are refreshments at practices and games.
The NFL has made some amazing improvements to the game of football and also
helped parents realize that contact sports don’t have to be dangerous. There are
plenty of ways to prevent injury.
