Getting the Family Ready for the Fall Sports Season!

fallsprotsAs the summer comes to an end, the fall sports season is upon us! And most families, like ours, are just trying to organize school, practices, games and everything that comes with it. So how can you prepare for it? Or can you? Sometimes the only way to get through it is to take one day at a time. But there are ways you can at least prepare for your kids to have a safe sports season.

Here are a few things you can do to ensure a safe, healthy season.

1- Start with an annual physical by your doctor. This will make sure there are no health conditions that will put your child at risk for further injuries.

2- Whatever the sport, make sure you child is well-equipped with protective gear. This should include mouth guards, padding, shin-guards, head gear and whatever else is needed.

3- Make sure you child warms up before every game and practice and cools down when it’s all finished. Stretching can help improve flexibility and prevent injuries and soreness.

4- Keep your kids hydrated. Hydration and good nutrition can arm them with the fuel they need to get through a game or practice. And always keep water and snacks on hand just in case their fuel gets low. It’s just as important to keep sunscreen on hand for those hot, sunny days.

5- Encourage good sportsmanship in all the sports they do. It’s important that children follow the rules of the game and that the coach does not allow illegal play. It’s also important that kids are taught how to avoid injuries and harmful situations.

Most importantly teach your kids how to have fun.
