smartfoodsEvery parent wants to have the smartest, kindest and most well-behaved child around. But sometimes busy schedules, not enough sleep and those terrible 3’s keep us from being the perfect parent.

So I went on a mission to find the foods that help make our kids smart. I found this article from Parade magazine that outlined some of the best foods for your kids brains.

Start with a good breakfast!
– Oatmeal topped with berries or sliced banana
– Cold Cereal with three or more grams of fiber and no more than six grams of sugar per serving (use skim or low fat milk)
– Egg Sandwich with whole-wheat English muffin
– Breakfast burrito with scrambled egg, low-fat cheese, black beans
– Waffle with peanut butter and banana

Lunch is also an important meal time especially if your child has an afternoon exam. Here are some options:
– Turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread, side baby carrots
– Cold whole-wheat pasta with chunk light tuna
– Chicken stir-fry
– Lentil soup with whole grain crackers

And don’t forget a healthy snack! Try these options:
– Apple slices with peanut butter
– Soy Crisps
– Baby carrots
– Celery
– Pepper sticks dipped in hummus or salsa
– String cheese
– Low-fat yogurt
– Raw almonds, walnuts or cashews
– Low-fat popcorn
– Any kind of fruit or veggies

If you can try adding some of these foods into your diet.  But don’t forget how important it is to keep your kids active!  Put these two together and your child will ace their exam or score the winning touchdown!  And it will make you feel a lot better about what you are doing to help them develop into incredible human beings.
