Do You Have to be Tall to Play Basketball?

Posted on: January 9th, 2013 by Chris No Comments

Lets face it, the first thing we notice about a basketball player is his or her height. Height helps in shooting, rebounding and defense but is it the most important quality?  It can’t hurt right?

But what if you have height but no game.  Then height can’t help you!

Any coach would tell you they would take good fundamentals over height any day of the week.

Those fundamentals are:

Shooting
Dribbling
Passing
Rebounding
Defense

And some players have it all …. including height. Did you know the average height for a female basketball player is 5’10 and 6’7 for a male basketball player. With that said, Michael Jordan (arguably the best basketball player to ever play) was only 6’6! He excelled in every aspect of the game.

And what about Muggsy Bogues? He was the shortest player to ever play in the NBA. At 5’3 he was quick, could shoot and was a great ball-stealer. Then there was Spud Webb. At 5’7 Webb had the highest jump ever of 42 inches. Both of these players were highly successful without being tall.

So do you need to be tall to play basketball? If you can excel in the 5 fundamentals, are fast on your feet and have determination, you can do anything! Go for it!
