Can Playing on Several Sports Teams Reduce Your Teen’s Obesity Risk?
The short answer is yes!
A recent study released by the American Association of Pediatrics shows that teens who played on three or more sports teams, were 27% less likely to be overweight. The study also showed that 39% of those teens were less likely to be obese compared to teens who didn’t play any sports.
The study was called “Influence of Sports, Physical Education, and Active Commuting to School on Adolescent Weight Status”. It was published last July. Researchers did phone surveys with more than 1,700 New Hampshire and Vermont high school students. They asked questions about their level of sports participation, other forms of activity, plus their height and weight. These phone surveys helped them to make this determination.
The research found that PE classes didn’t have much impact on the student’s weight. It was the regular practices and actual games that helped reduce kids weight and lower their risk for being overweight.
There are other benefits for teens who play on different sports. Besides the health benefit there is a social benefit that comes with being on a team. And when you expand that to include three different teams, then your child’s social circle has improved that much more. Granted playing on three teams can be taxing on your schedule, but there are a lot of benefits to trying!
